According to my Grand-Mother he was captured by the Confederates and spent time at Andersonville Civil War Prison Camp.
Here are links to photos of Abraham and his wife Charlotte J. (Munepower) Good:

Found some more census info for Madison, WI and now I am reasonably sure it’s him! Thanks again for posting this photo, the only way I probably ever would have seen a picture of this family member. Take care –

There is a John H. Nichols who was 15 in 1860 who lived in Watertown with his family. Can’t find anything that makes them the same person, though they could be.

Kudos on the site; what a wealth of info! I stumbled across your site while looking for family history on the name Nichols. Based on some census and military records, I think that the John H. Nichols (drummer in the front) pictured in the labeled photo may be my great-great grandfather, but I am trying to confirm some info. By any chance do you know if/where any military documents generally recorded date of birth at time of enlistment? If I have the right person, he would have been approximately 14 years old in 1861 when he enlisted for the 11th Infantry band. Was that common, or even reasonable to assume I might have the right person? Any expert advice and historical perspective would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, and keep up the good work!
Tamsin
